Use this matrix as an early shortlist, not as a final settings study. The required generator protection functions depend on machine size, earthing method, prime mover, excitation system and grid connection.
Most synchronous generators need stator earth fault protection, generator differential protection, reverse power protection and loss-of-excitation protection. Larger or grid-critical machines may also need out-of-step protection, breaker failure protection and detailed event recording.
A generator protection and control panel combines the relays, CT/VT interfaces, test blocks and trip circuit supervision. For smaller machines, a subset may be installed in a shared protection panel. Compare the generator stator earth fault relay, generator reverse power relay and generator loss-of-excitation relay before fixing the scheme.
Read the generator protection category and the article on when to modernize a generator protection system. Create a settings schedule and test plan before the panel is manufactured.
